  1. I would found it hilarious that there are people calling SMT a pokemon clone. like, are there people out there calling persona a pokemon clone too, since it started as a spin-off of SMT

  2. The only games from this genre that I've played that aren't Pokemon are Nexomon Extinction and the first Nexomon. (Did you know there is actually a really cheap version of the first Nexomon game, which used to be mobile exclusive, on the Switch?) And Nexomon Extinction is actually one of my favorite games on the Switch, possibly of all time. I have been disappointed by Pokemon games recently, so I'm glad that these alternatives exist. One of the things I love about Nexomon Extinction is that it feels like playing a pokemon game would, and of course it's got great unique features like custom mode and an actually interesting and funny story. I'm pretty interested in trying out some of these other games myself, they seem like a good time. I agree with you, it's a shame for people to dismiss games like these as just "knock off Pokemon," when (at least in the case of Nexomon) they even do some mechanics better than Pokemon. I agree that monster hunting/catching/training games should be viewed on their own merits first, rather than just as rip-offs of Pokemon.

  3. The only thing I would say about Temtem, is earlier in development they got the "this is pokemon, but better" from a lot of pokemon fans, because of the Natdex cut and a lot of other things. The thing I didn't like is they never seem to try and correct people saying it was different and let that be something that helped it grow.

  4. Hey Cal 🙂 wonderful video, I'm a pretty big monster collecting fan and it makes me happy to see a video like this.

I highly recommend Monster Sanctuary, Coromon and Monster Crown myself. They're probably my favorites in the genre (I would say Temtem too but you're already playing it!)

Other monster collectors you could check out whenever you have the free time would be: Disc Creatures (very GBC feel – much like Monster Crown and Dokimon), Dragon Warrior Monsters (Dragon Quest's own ""Pokemon-like"", also Monster Crown's biggest inspiration outside of Pokemon), DemiKids (smt game that plays very similar to Pokemon), Abomi Nation (very very silly game but is built around the Nuzlocke Mode that a lot of people enjoy along with customizable playthroughs) and there is also a game to release next year called Eternal Exodus which is very inspired by the SMT series.

Sorry for the long comment, thanks for the awesome video! 👌

  5. Pokémon fans when someone makes a rom hack that adds new Pokémon: 🥰🥰🥰
Pokémon fans when someone makes a game inspired by Pokémon: 🤬🤬🤬
Didn't expect someone to mention EvoCreo, I beat it myself and don't personally recommend it a lot, the creature designs are interesting and I like the abundance of Creos that can evolve into any type, but the game is very buggy, both visually and in actual gameplay, I'd recommend just waiting for the devs to release EvoCreo 2, but that's probably gonna take a while considering it's been delayed many times.

  6. Monster Crown definitely looks gen 1 pokemon inspired, with the watercolor art and the yellow monster reminiscent of Nidoking. Actually makes me feel nostalgic for the old games just by looking at that art.

  7. Best thing about this Genre of games is that their are so many ways you can take it and that they are always new ones popping up! Makes me wish I had more time and money to play them all!

  8. The main thing I look for in these monster taming games is the monster designs. Temtem is good, but most of the designs just fall short for me, save Inki. Fucking love Inki, its literally the best thing. But I cant exactly go through the game with just Inki lol.

All the Kinfolk in Kindred Fates and Animon in Lumentale both look really good to me, so I'm looking forward to those the most.

  9. I played a little bit of TemTem when I got an early access demo and it was cool. But what keeps me from buying it are the TemTems themselves. I've seen most of the designs and none of them look appealing to me except a couple. The platypus (which is literally from a fake pokemon leak lol) and one of the little robot ones are the only ones I liked. I'm sure the game is pretty good overall, but the appeal of monster taming games to me are the designs.

Now Coromon I loved. I liked a lot of the designs in that one. And one of the things gameplay-wise that I liked a lot was that there were separate types for moves. That's something I think would be cool if Pokemon did it. They already kind of have that with sound-based moves like Uproar etc.

  10. A lot of people don't realise that its become a subgenre of rpg and won't accept that pokemon is a "monster battler/creature collector" in addition to being an rpg.
That's like saying that any jrpg is a final fantasy clone simply because it's the most popular

  11. I don't like the term Pokemon Clones it is called Monster Taming Genre definitely one of my favorite subgenre in gaming Fossil Fighters and Monster Hunter Stories 1 and 2 are my favorites in the genre. I just wish Pokemon Fans gave it more of a chance because there are good Monster Taming games out there! And check out Gym Leader Ed he does so many Monster Taming Game videos.

  12. I love both digimon and pokemon but digimon has always hit home for me. And I would not consider digimon a pokemon clone they can out in a year of each other and I believe digimon was meant to be a answer to tamagotchi it was more for the male side of the fan base. Rise monster to fight each other.caughting wasn't really in the equation when started out. But regardless I love them both

  13. Usually, whenever I hear about games like Pokemon, the subgenre they're in is usually called either "Monster/Creature Collecting" or just Mons. Mons is a little bit better to call, cause it's a more broad way of saying "oh, it has monsters you can collect that you can raise/can battle alongside you" cause that's how games like Persona and (sorta similarly) Final Fantasy XIII-2 deal with that; you still collect monsters, but they are just an extension of your character's power or just one member of your team. Not to mention that it can also include Virtual Pet/Monster Raising games like the Digimon V-Pets and Monster Rancher, too. As well as anime that include similar premises to all those games.

10:37 I think the reason you didn't get anything about this one on Google is mainly because it's not called that anymore. It's called Dokimon, or MonTamer Maker. It's a Maker/Game Engine that allows people to make their own monster collecting game, with Dokimon being the base/sample game to show it off. Also Ooblets has been fully released for like a while now.

There's actually a LOT of cool Mon games that I wish more people knew about. Roblox has a few pretty neat ones, like Loomian Legacy and Doodle World. World of Final Fantasy is also a pretty neat one too. Apparently there's a Tales Of game on Wii that has a similar way of monster collecting like FF XIII-2? I don't know, I never played it or seen anything about it, but that's a thing. There's a Touhou fan game called Puppet Dance Performance, and it's made by the original creator of the original Japanese versions of Touhoumon, the Touhou based Fire Red/Emerald ROM hacks.

I could go on and on. In fact, thanks to people like Gym Leader Ed and some game showcases, I found out about a bunch of mon games that I would never have knew existed! I just wish people would stop immediately thinking that they're Pokemon Clones.

  14. I played all the (localised) Yo Kai Watch games to their limits, and for 3DS games, they’re really good. Much better than Pokemon’s Gen 7 Ultra games on the same platform. (Mainly because the devs allowed you to skip character dialogue as long as there isn’t a tutorial in it somewhere.)
Also the reason it stopped is because the devs (Level 5) shut down their American, and other countries’ departments of Level 5. So it’s just the Japanese department left.

  15. Some of my favorite games, other than pokemon, have been monster tamers or "pokemon clones". Games like: Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, Dinosaur King, Bakugan, Coromon, Temtem, Monster Rancher, Puzzle & Dragons, etc. You could even say that Roms/Fan games for pokemon are technically "pokemon clones". It's okay for things to inspire other projects. Look at Shovel Knight for example, it could be seen as a "clone" of Mario, Zelda and the Duck Tales video game. Or look at Undertale, which has a lot of inspiration from Earthbound seeing as Tobi Fox made a Rom for Earthbound in the first place.
Games like these should be encouraged not ignored or seen as just a "pokemon clone". I hope more Monster Tamers are made becuase it's one of my favourite genre of games, whether they are inspired by pokemon or not.

  16. I don’t think the term “Pokemon clone” is necessarily a bad thing. I think it saves us the trouble of making up terms like “creature collectors” or “monster tamers” or something like that. Pokémon was clearly the game that popularized this genre so “Pokémon clone” is just an easy term to throw all of these other games under. While there are some more blatant games that copy Pokémon a little too much like Nexomon, there are a ton of games that put a very unique spin on the genre like Spectrobes or Fossil Fighters. Fossil Fighters is in my top 10 games of all time, so for me calling something a Pokémon clone really doesn’t in itself diminish the value of the game, it’s simply an easy term so people know exactly what you’re talking about. Although, a better term in my opinion would be “Pokémon-like” kind of going off the term “Souls-like” when referring to boss based action games like Dark Souls. I think that’s kind of a best of both worlds term so people don’t see these games as blatant copies, and also people know what the game is going to be like.

  19. Yo-Kai Watch is a game series I haven't played, but I do like some of the designs from it.

Cassette Beasts I've actually heard of, but I've never looked too deep into it.
