Glad to see you reviewed Coromon, I've been lets playing it the last few months and its been incredible. Like you said there is a lot of comparisons to Pokemon, because that was the basis for it but the game became its own thing. Story, creature, world designs, along with the accessibility features.
I love the Potential system, it is a great mechanic to keep an eye on your EV's. Rather than having to battle 50 Geodudes, just to get an extra 15 points in defense.
My main gripe, and this is still something that plagues Pokemon. Certain Coromon's movesets don't match their stat spreads. For example, the Ghost Type Coromon I have on my team has ridiculous special attack. Its the highest stat but a large margin, it learns 2 special attacks. 1 by level up and the other by skill flash. Another is all the water moves are special attacks, my Water type has better physical attack. As a Game Designer, currently working on his own monster taming game. The moves and stats need more balancing to fit the type of build they are meant for. You can build it with the potential values, but the Coromon will still be weaker as a whole because of their movesets.
This is so close to pokemon that I was expecting team rocket to show up. The thing is, the ceo of eve online said that there are so many games like world of warcraft, you might as well play world of warcraft. This is how I see Coromon, it's so like Pokemon you might as well play Pokemon. This is why other monster catching games aren't as popular. These games need to have something Pokemon doesn't. If I did play the catch em all games I would stick to Pokemon because, the other games will be about the same without the quality a multi billion corporation can bring. It's like that almost Doom game, it had rhythm mechanics Doom hasn't got. The devs didn't have the same budget but they had a unique idea. Imagine a Pokelike having something like that, it would take of straight away. I mean you can tell me I'm wrong but I think my case is strong.
